The FAA has approved the new empennage design for R44 aircraft which includes a symmetric horizontal stabilizer and tail cone assembly. The new KI-285-2 retrofit kit for the R44 and previously approved KI-285-1 for the R66 represent significant safety enhancements in preventing low-G mast bumping events. Both kits facilitate easy adoption, allowing maintainers to complete this conversion in the field.

Approaching Overhaul?
The improved R66 Horizontal Stabilizer is now included (where approved) on all 2000 hour overhaul kits (KI-6602) for use in jurisdictions where airworthiness approval has been issued by the governing Civil Air Authority (CAA). The improved tail cone assembly has a 4000 hour life limit.
